The Dhakeswari temple is part of the famous 51 Shakti Peethas in Indian Subcontinent. Here the gem of Sati’s crown is said to have fallen. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, owes its name to Goddess Dhakeshwari, a form of Shakti. The temple is situated in Lombok, which is a part of Old Dhaka.

During Navratri, the  Dhakeshwari temple transforms into a venue for the biggest celebration of Navratri and Durga Puja. Not only Hindu but people from all religions take part in the celebration with great joy, enthusiasm and interest. It is one of the oldest temples that presently exist in Bangladesh. It is recognized as the national temple of Bangladesh.

The Dhakeshwari (Durga) temple was built in the 12th century by Ballal Sen, a king of the Sena dynasty, For ages, the temple has been held in great importance. However, during the partition in 1947, the original 800 yr old idol was removed and taken to Kumartuli, Kolkata. Current the presiding deity at the Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka is the replica of the original idol.

Today, the original idol is in Kumartuli, Kolkata. A businessman Debendranath Chaudhary, in 1950, built a temple for the Goddess Kumortuli area and established the Goddess here at Kumartuli for her daily puja. The idol is 1.5 feet tall, has ten arms, mounted on her lion in the form of Katyani Mahishasurmardini ‘Durga’. On her two sides are Laxmi, Saraswati, Kartik and Ganesh.

The current architectural style of the Dhakeswari Temple at Dhaka temple cannot be dated to the period of 12th Century because of the numerous repairs, renovations, and rebuilding which have taken place over time. It is considered an essential part of Dhaka’s cultural heritage.

This temple is visited by pilgrims and devotees from all over the world. It is also considered as an important temple among the 51 Shaktipeetha list of temples

Visit to the Dhakeswari Temple is part of the itinerary of India Beacons –  Bangladesh 7 Shaktipeeth Tour from Kolkata or Dhaka. You can join the Bangladesh Shaktipeeth tour from Kolkata and enjoy hassle-free service. India Beacons Sojourn can also take care of your Bangladesh Visa if you so desire for the Bangladesh Shaktipeeth Tour.

Reference of the Sugandha Shaktipeeth can be found in the Shakti Peetha Stotram – verse 5 of the Peetha Nirnay Tantra and the Shiv Charitra.  Bharatchandra’s Bengali poem ‘Annadamangala’ in a verse, mentions that the nose of Maa Sati is said to have fallen at Sugandha and the Bhairav as Traimbak.

Sugandha Shaktipeeth, a temple of the Goddess Sunanda, is located in the village of Shikarpur, 10 miles north of Barisal, in Bangladesh. This Hindu temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Here Maa Sati’s nose is said to have fallen.
The Sugandha Shaktipeeth is situated on the Eastern bank of the river Sugandha. The idol of Ugratara is presently worshipped as the Sugandha Shaktipeeth. The temple of Bhairav Traimbak is situated on the western bank of the river Sugandha near Jhalikathi at Ponabalia.

Sugandha Shaktipeeth History:

Although the precise history of the Sugandha Shaktipeeth is not available, it is understood that the temple has an ancient history. However, the present temple is a newly renovated one built/renovated in 2018 and we can hardly find any remnants of the old temple. What stands today is an elevated modern temple, with an idol, which is not too old either.
The presiding deity of the temple is a statue/idol of Maa Ugratara. The present goddess of Ugratara is a sculptured statue in black stone and she holds a Khetak, a kharga, a Blue Lotus (Nila Padda), and a Garland of Narmund (Mundamala) in her four hands.

Inscribed on the background of the black stone idol of Ugratara are the statues of Karthik, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and Ganesha. She is worshipped as per Tara Sadhana according to Buddhist rituals

It is believed that the original idol may have dated back to the period when Bengal was ruled by the rulers of the Pala dynasty and the Buddhist culture and Buddhist influence was very much prevalent in Bengal. The original idol was supposed to be an idol of the Buddhist Goddess of Ugratara. With the passage of time, however, she came to be worshipped as the Hindu Goddess of Maa Tara (A form of Dasa Maha vidya Kali).

As per the handwritten manuscripts available with the Sebaits, the region of Shikarpur was once a dense forest. Gangagati Chakraborty in 695 BC, learnt about the presence of the idols of Maa Sugandha and Shyambhu Bhairav inside the forest in his dream.

As instructed in his dream, he found the idols and established them in temples on the bank of the river Sugandha for worship as the Sugandha Shaktipeeth. Thereafter he kept on performing regular Pujas and the idols of Maa Sugandha and the Shivalinga as Bhairav Traimbak became popular .

However, in AD 1884, the idol of Maa Sugandha was destroyed by a group of people from the village of Atipur. Subsequently, an idol of the Hindu Goddess Kali was established in its place which, then, came to be worshipped as the Sugandha Shaktipeeth. That idol was again destroyed by the Pakistani Army during the war of 1971. Thereafter, an idol of cement was worshipped for some years in a small temple.

Again in 2018, the latest/present idol in black stone was established and the temple renovated. What stands today is the temple and idol renovated, reconstructed and rebuilt in 2018.

Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple is a famous Hindu temple in Bangladesh, dedicated to the goddess Kali. It is regarded as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of the Indian subcontinent. According to belief, Jeshoreshwari Temple represents the site where the palm of Maa Sati is said to have fallen. The Bhairava protecting her is Chanda Bhairav.

Since this is the spot where the Devi’s hand is said to have fallen, it is believed to be a place of immense spiritual power for it is with her hand that the Goddess bestows her gifts. It is through the Abhaya mudra of her hand that she removes all fears and darkness.

This temple is located in Ishwaripur, a village in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira. The name “Jeshoreshwari” means “Goddess of Jeshore”, hence she is considered to be the presiding deity of Jeshore. The temple is visited by pilgrims from all over, irrespective of caste, creed, race and religion.

Legend has it that it was Maharaja Pratapaditya’s most trusted general Kamal Khowaja, a Seljuk Turk soldier, who was instrumental in locating the Jessoreswari Devi.

The story goes as such that Maharaja Pratapaditya had entrusted his trusted General Kamal Khowaja with safeguarding his Dhumghat palace. One night during a round of inspection of the palace guards, Kamal khwaja saw a luminous ray of light emanating from a woodland bush near the horizon in the pitch-black sky.

Taking it to be a supernatural phenomenon, the Turk hurried to the king’s bedchamber, woke and told him about the vision.

Pratapaditya immediately came out to see the glow of light and he too saw the strange illumination. He reckoned that the source of the light emanated from a dense forest some 20 kilometres west of the palace.

The very next day he went to that place with a company of soldiers. They felled trees and cleared the spot, and then excavated it to unearth a piece of huge head of a touchstone statue of goddess Kali.

Being a worshipper of Maa Kali, Maharaja Pratapaditya, built the Jashoreshwari Devi temple there. Pratapaditya forthwith declared the idol the guardian deity of his kingdom and named her Jessoreswari. He built a temple complex for the goddess, which came to be known as Jessoreswari Temple and the area as Ishwaripur.

However, an ode to the Mahakali form of the Divine Goddess or Shakti mentions that the temple was built by the Brahmin architect Anar who built a 100-door temple for the Jashoreshwari Shakti Peetha. Later it was renovated by Lakshman Sen and Pratapaditya in their reigning periods.

Jaintia Shaktipeeth | Bangladesh Shaktipeeth

Jaintia Shaktipeeth Temple dedicated to Goddess Jaintia is one of the 51 Shaktipeeth Temples. No mention of Jaintia Shaktipeeth is found in Devi Bhagwata or in the Kalika Puran. However, according to the Pithanirnay Tantra, Tantra Churamani and Shiva Charitra, Jaintia Is considered a Shaktipeeth.

The left thigh of Goddess Sati is said to have fallen at Jaintia Shaktipeeth. Here, Devi is worshiped in the form of Maa Jayanti and the protecting Bhairav is worshipped as Kramadeeshwar or Kramadhesh.

There are disputes about the position of this peetha. Based on most presented manuscripts and facts it is situated in jaintiapur upazila, Bangladesh, which was previously the capital of jaintia hills tribe kingdom, which became the jaintia hills district of Meghalaya, India, excluding Jaintiapur. However, some people say that it is the nartiang Durga temple which is the real jayanti shaktipeeth, though there is shortage of corroborating evidences. Actually, there are two places, one in Bangladesh and the other in India which are believed to be the Jaintia Shaktipeeth. To understand the Jaintia Shaktipeeth, we need to understand a little about the history of Jaintia kingdom.

One theory says that the word “Jaintia” is derived the shrine of Jayanti Devi or Jainteswari, an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Durga. Another theory says that the name is derived via Pnar (the language of the rulers) from Sutnga, a settlement in the modern day Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya.

The Jaintia Kingdom was a matrilineal kingdom spread over the present-day Bangladesh’s Sylhet Division and India’s Meghalaya state. In 630 AD, the kingdom was split into three different kingdoms by Raja Guhak for his three sons, namely, into (1) the Jaintia Kingdom, (2) the Gour Kingdom and (3) the Laur Kingdom.

He gave his eldest son, Jayantak, the northern hills which remained known as the Jaintia Kingdom. He gave his second son, Gurak, the southern plains which would be named Gour Kingdom, and he gave his third son, Luddak, the western plains which would become the Laur Kingdom.

The Jaintia Kingdom of King Jayantak extended from the east of the Shillong Plateau of present-day Meghalaya in north-east India, into the plains to the south, and north upto the Barak River valley in Assam, India. For the smooth functioning of the kingdom, it had the summer capital as well as the winter capital. Both these capitals were under the jurisdiction of the Jaintia king.

The winter capital was located at Jaintia Rajbari, Jaintiapur, in the plains at the foot of the Jaintia Hills, which is now part of the Sylhet region of Bangladesh. What remains now of the Rajbari is just ruins. One can visit the Jaintaswari House/Jaintiaswari Estate to get a peek into history. The temple of Jaintia Shaktipeeth (Bangladesh side) is also located here. It is known by the name of the Bam Jongha Temple

The summer capital may have been at Nartiang in the Jaintia Hills, but little remains of it now. The summer capital, today, falls in the Indian state of Meghalaya. Apart from the Nartiang Durga Temple (Also considered the Jaintia Shaktipeeth) and a nearby site with many megalithic structures, much of it, what is today, falls under the Sylhet region of Bangladesh.

a) Jaintia Shaktipeeth, Baurbagh village, Bangladesh

After the partition of his own kingdom by Raja Guhak in three parts, his eldest son, Jayantak built his own Kamakhya Bama Jangha Pitha temple in the southeast of his kingdom on top of a hill near modern-day Kanaighat. It was supposedly at the spot where the left thigh (Bam Jangha in Hindi) of Maa Sati was said to have fallen. This was known as the the Bam Jangha Pitha or the Jaintia Shaktipeeth. Here human sacrifice was practiced as part of the rituals of worship of the Jaintia Shaktipeeth

The present day location of this Jaintia Shaktipeeth is on the Sylhet – Shillong road at Baurbhag village in Kanaighat Upazilla near Jaintiapur in Bangladesh. This place is about 43 kms north of Srihatta. Srihatta was the old name of the present day town of Sylhet.

However, in 1835, the British East India Company, defeated the then king of Jaintia, Raja Rajendra Singh Syiem Sutnga; put an end to the practice of human sacrifice and for a paltry amount of six thousand takas per annum as privy purse, annexed the kingdom of Jaintia with Srihatta as part of the state of Bengal. Jaintia no longer existed as a state or kingdom. What remains today of the kingdom and the old palace are the remnants and ruins around the Jaintia Shaktipeeth Temple.

b) Nartiang Durga Temple, Jowai, Meghalaya, India

The second temple of Jayanti Shaktipeeth is located in India. It is called the Nartiang Durga temple. Nartiang Durga temple is located in the Nartiang Village of Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya. Built in the 15th Century, the Jaintia Temple happens to be a very important and auspicious place of worship for the Hindus as it is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths.

The Nartiang Jayanteswari temple is located 24 kms north of Jowai.Jowai, the district Head Quarter of Jayantia, is 65 km to the East of Shillong hills on NH 44

Devi’s left thigh is believed to have fallen at Nartiang in the Jaintia Hills. Hence the Goddess is known as Jainteshwari. The Jaintia king Jaso Manik (1606–1641) had married Lakshmi Narayana, the daughter of the Hindu Koch king Nara Narayana. It is believed that it was Lakshmi Narayana who had influenced the Jaintia Royalty to embrace Hinduism.

King Dhan Manik had made Nartiang the summer capital of the Jaintia Kingdom about 600 years ago. One night, the goddess appeared to him in a dream and informed him of the significance of the place and asked him to build a temple in Her honour. Following this, the Jainteshwari temple in Nartiang was established. The strategic location of the temple and presence of weapons like cannons suggests that the temple must have been part of a fort of the Jaintia Kings

Since the Jaintia kings used to practice human sacrifice to propitiate Devi Jainteswari, when they required a priest for the new Durga temple, no Brahmin was willing to take the job. As a result the king had to bring Maratha Kshatriyas belonging to Deshmukh clan from distant Maharashtra to take the job of priests in the late 17th century. The present priest of the temple too belongs to that clan and is the 30th generation Pujari of the temple.

Recently, the dilapidated five centuries-old temple was demolished, and in its place a new one was built with minimal change. Interestingly, here Durga and Jayanteswari (also called Matchyodari) are kept in the same place and worshipped together. Both are astadhatu idols and about 6-8 inch tall.

Mahalaxmi Griba|Lakhigadi Shaktipeeth|Shri Shaila Shaktipeeth

Shri Shri Mahalakshmi Griba Shaktipeeth is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths located at Joinpur village, near Gotatikar, which is 3 km south-east of Sylhet town in Bangladesh. This is one of the famous Bangladesh Shaktipeeth. This Shaktipeeth is also known by the name of  Sri Lakhigadi Shaktipeeth or the Shri Shail Shaktipeeth.

Maa Sati’s neck is said to have fallen here. Hence, the place came to be known as Griba Mahapeeth. Maa is worshipped here as Mahalakshmi and the Bhairav form is Sambaranand.

There is no idol at the Mahalaxmi temple. Maa here is worshipped in the form of a shila (Rock form). Also, there is a peculiarity about the Mahalaxmi Griba Temple; the temple has no roof on the top. According to Maa’s wishes, she desired not to be worshipped enclosed within the four walls and roof of a temple, rather she wished to be worshipped in the open.

Hence a brick enclosure was built around the Shila and Devi has been worshipped in such a form since the time she was discovered. In fact, even after the current renovation of the temple, the roof of the temple has been left open and Maa’s wish is still being followed.

So many Myths and Mysticism! Every Temple has a story to tell and there is a nice little story of how this Shaktipeeth was discovered. This Shaktipeeth had remained unearthed for a long time and according to hearsay, the deity was found only between the 12th and the 13th century, when a contractor named Debiprasad Das was undertaking the work of  constructing road around the spot of the temple.

For the purpose of the job, Debi Das had employed a group of workers. While excavating along the road, the workers stumbled upon a big rock somewhat of the nature of porous pumice rock arising out of volcanic eruption. In spite of trying hard, they failed to take the stone out of the ground. Then a worker hit the rock and broke it into two. A girl gushed out of the forest from nowhere and slapped the worker and disappeared in thin air, leaving everyone shell shocked and confused.

That night, Maa appeared in the dream of Debiprasad and ordered him to establish Maa at that place by the name of MahaLaxmi and make arrangements for Her daily Puja.

Being a wealthy man, Debiprasad Das intended to build a temple of brick and mortar. However, Maa again appeared in his dream the next night and expressed her desire to be worshipped in the open and not in an enclosed temple with a roof on the top. Following Devi’s order, Debiprasad surrounded the shila with bricks. This is the reason why there is no idol in the temple and also a roof on the temple. At present, the Shila remains covered with Sarees and devotees worship Maa as a Shila.

An interesting story !

The Bhairav of Shri Shail Shaktipeeth, Bhairav Sambaranand is not within the temple complex, It is at a distance of about half  km from the Mahalaxmi temple. The Bhairav Temple is situated on the top of a low mound. It is interesting to notice that the Shivalinga of Bhairav Sambarananda is a Swambhu and built of the same nature of porous pumice rock arising out of volcanic eruption as the Shila of the Mahalaxmi Griba Temple. A huge Trishul can be seen next to the Shivling of the temple. The temple has been renovated recently.

Visit to the Shri Shail Shaktipeetha/Mahalaxmi Griba  Temple is part of the itinerary of India Beacons –  Bangladesh 7 Shaktipeeth Tour from Kolkata or Dhaka. You can join the Bangladesh Shaktipeeth tour from Kolkata and enjoy hassle-free service. Chattal Shaktipeeth | Bangladesh Shaktipeeth

Chattal Shaktipeeth is situated on the bank of the river Mandakini, in Sitakunda of Chittagong District, Bangladesh. Here Devi’s Right arm is said to have fallen. Here Maa Sati is worshipped as ‘Bhawani’. Many people also call the Chattal Shaktipeeth the Bhavani Shaktipeeth.

Bhairav here is worshipped as ‘Kramadhiswar/Chandrasekhar’. Bhairav Kramadhiswara is Swayambhu, i.e self effacing or arising from the ground and not established. In fact, many consider it as the thirteenth Jyotirlinga.

Many believe or think that the Chandranath temple on the Chandranath Hill is the Shaktipeeth. Actually Chandranath  is the name of the Hill and the Shaktipeeth there is Bhavani Shaktipeeth.

The temple of Chattal Shaktipeeth or Bhavani Shaktipeeth is at the foot of the Chandranath Hills.  The idol of Maa Bhavani has been recently renovated.

The Chattal Shaktipeeth is located at Sitakund in Chattagram. It is a part of the Chandranath Dham. Chandranath Dham is a holy place of pilgrimage known all over the sub-continent for centuries. It is mentioned in the Puranas that Lord Ramchandra visited this place during his exile in the forests for visiting the Shaktipeetha.

The great sage Bhargava, at that time, brought into existence by his supernatural powers a big pond/reservoir for Maa Sita (wife of Lord Ramchandra) to bathe in, which was called ‘Sitakunda’ after her. The Chandranath Temple, which is located at the east side of Sitakunda city, is about 1152 feet (around) high and the highest place in Chattogram district. One has to trek up to reach the Chandranath Temple.

Visit to the Chattal Temple/Bhawani Shaktipeeth is part of the itinerary of India Beacons –  Bangladesh 7 Shaktipeeth Tour from Kolkata or Dhaka. You can join the Bangladesh Shaktipeeth tour from Kolkata and enjoy hassle-free service. Aparna Shaktipeeth|Karota Shakti Peeth|Bangladesh Shaktipeeth

Aparna Shaktipeeth is located on the bank of the river Karatoya at Sherpur upazilla of Bogura District in the Rajshahi Division of Bangladesh. This temple is about 28 kilometres from the town of Sherpur.

It is one of the 51 Shaktipeethas and a sacred pilgrimage site for the followers of Hinduism. The presiding deity of this Shaktipeeth is Maa Aparna and the Bhairava is Baba Bamesh/Bamon.

There is a difference in opinion in regards to the devi’s parts that fell here. Some point out that Devi’s left anklet (ornament) fell here, others point out that that the ribs of left chest or the right eye or the bedding of Maa Sati had fallen here.

The Temple premise comprises of 4 acres (12 ‘bighas’) of land surrounded by boundary walls. Besides the Main Temple the temple consists of a ‘Belbaran Tola’, ‘Patal Bhairav Shiv’ Temple, four other Shiva Temples, a ‘Gopal’ Temple, a ‘Basudev’ Temple and a ‘Nat’ Temple/’Atchala’.

In the North side, there is the ‘Sheba Angan’, the sacred ‘Shakha Pukur’, two ‘Bath Ghat’, two Shiva Temples outside the boundary walls and a ‘Panchamundo Asana’. This temple was built by Rani Bhawani if Natore.

A legend says that once a conch-bangles dealer was passing by a pond in a jungle near the temple of Ma Bhabani. At that time, a little girl with a tip of vermilion on her forehead came to him and told him that she was the daughter of Natore’s palace. She bought a pair of conch-bangles from the dealer and requested him to collect the price of that bangles from the Queen of Natore kept at a specified place of the palace.

Hearing all this from the dealer, the Queen rushed to the spot with him and her men. On the earnest prayer of the conch-dealer, Ma Bhabani raised from that pond showing Her two wrists with the conch-bangles worn. At this incident, this holy “Shakha-Pukur” (conch-bangles pond) became famous and the devotees take their sacred bath in this pond when they come here.

Bangladesh 7 Shaktipeeth tour

We did the Bangladesh Shaktipeeth Tour in June 2022. All arrangement like hotel, vehicle and guide was perfectly arranges. However, the only problem with us was getting veg food, which we had to cope up with. thanks for the wonderful journey. Without the help of India Beacons Sojourn, the tour would not have been possible

Bangladesh Shaktipeeth tour

We had booked the Bangladesh Shaktipeeth tour through Kolkata Car Rental and had a wonderful and safe journey all throughout Bangladesh. People were very cooperative, helpful and our guide Mr. Sandeep was always there to help us. Comfortable vehicle and journey. Driver Raibul was very helpful and cooperative. A five star for the services of Kolkata car Rental. Would definitely recommend them or the Bangladesh Shaktipeeth Tour.

Shaktipeeth Tour of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha

We had hired a Tata Hexa in the second week of January and were lucky to be the first passengers to hire the vehicle. A Brand new vehicle. Not much to say. We did a trip to Babadham and the West Bengal Shaktipeeth and then to Puri. Driver Dhruv was extremely cordial and polite. A five star experience.
